Ontario Cup Racing Highlights

Over the weekend several swimmers competed at the Ontario Cup meet held at the U of T pool. This was a long course racing tune up for several Olympic trials hopefuls and a taste of senior swimming for our younger swimmers moving up in the ranks. TSC swimmers were well represented throughout the meet in both senior and youthful ranks.

Top of the podium swims were posted by Tobias Oriwol-200 fr, Warren Barnes-100 and 200 breast, Frank Despond- 400 fr, Zach Summerhayes- 200 IM, Jeremie Holdom- 400 IM, Heather Maitland- 200 and 400 fr and Vanessa Treasure- 200 fly. Other medal swims were posted by Mike Smerek- 2nd 50-100 fly, Andrea Jurenovskis- 2nd 50 fr, 3rd -200 fr, 50-100 back, Austin Rockett 2nd 200 fly as well as Oliver Straszynski 2nd – 400-1500 fr. Oliver also qualified for Olympic trials with his 1500 time of 16:35.04 LC… this is also a new club record in the boys 15-17 category!

Other younger swimmers of note were Tyler Tong-McDermott (200 breast), Vanessa Gold (400-800 fr) and Cino Ling (200 back) who all were very close to hitting their Olympic Trials standards. These efforts are especially encouraging being it’s the middle of January and the midst of heavy training portion of the championship run. Strong training swims were posted by Edward Liu (100-200 fr), Nathalin Moy (100-200 fly), Lukasz Kosiorek (100 fr), Simone Cseplo (100 fr, 100 back), Jillian Stoyan (100 breast, 200 IM), Edgar Flores (100 fly), Bronwyn Colford (200 fr and 400 IM), Zoe Rivard-Aslin (50 fr) and David Riley (100 breast).

From here the groups will be preparing for championship meets such as OUA’s and CIS’s for the Varsity group. Eastern Canadian’s and Provincials will be next for the high school and younger groups while our Training Centre swimmers head to Missouri for a US Grand Prix event. After that it is off to the Big O for the Candian Olympic Trials. Ohh Baby!

Racing Highlights Cindy Nicholas Swim Classic

Racing highlights from Coach Adam Schwarz and Coach Lily Dong

Silver 2, Silver 3, Silver 4, Gold 4 - TSC sent 15 swimmers from our Gold and Silver streams to race this past weekend at the Cindy Nicholas Swim Classic in Scarborough. All four groups together boasted an impressive 86% best times with some swimmers posting huge drops! We had many heat winners and an event winner in the 100 Butterfly. Everyone we sent to the meet had an amazing showing with each person scoring one top 6 swim!

Margaret had a perfect meet, swam all top 6 including 1st in 100 fly, 2nd in 400Free

Dennis, John, and Marie also swam a perfect meet, each with several top 6 swims.

Marie and Kira had their first ever 400free as their very first swim in 2012, and finished very strong with 3rd and 4th respectively.

Joshua and Spencer both broke the 30 second mark on the 50m Freestyle. Spencer rocketing down the pool right alongside another swimmer to show the true racing spirit of the water; Joshua leading off the 200m Freestyle Relay gave TSC a solid head start while speeding to the sub thirty mark in a lighting fast relay heat.

New to the TSC family, Michelle and Cameron raced in their first swim meet this weekend. Michelle had an incredible swim in the 200 Individual Medley; After being passed in the Backstroke leg of the race, she battled back an entire body length in the Freestyle portion to out touch her opponent and win her heat. Cameron had an amazing swim in the 100 Breastroke; hitting all of his pullouts off of every wall, he fought his way through a fast race to win his heat.

Kimia had 100% best times in her races while Jack had a solid showing in both the relays to help TSC place higher on the podium.

Emerson had top six placings in all his races and used his blistering speed to round out our relay teams.

Aside from all the great swims we had this weekend, there was amazing team sprit seen throughout the meet. Our true TSC colours showed on Friday Night  when everyone stayed on deck to cheer until the last TSC swimmer was out of the water!

An exciting weekend of racing ahead
