TSC Coaches

ALEX WALLINGFORD

Alex came to TSC in the fall of 2010 as the new Head Coach and Director of Swimming, bringing with him a strong legacy of coaching successes since 1986.  Alex coaches our most elite group of athletes in the National and Gold 1 groups and, as Director of Swimming, oversees the advancement of every TSC athlete.

Prior to TSC, Alex was with the Oakville Aquatic Club for 14 years, 3 of those as the head coach, and prior to Oakville, held coaching positions at Laurentian University Swim Club, Ajax Aquatic Club and the University of Michigan.  During that time, Alex has coached athletes to many successes including Ontario Provincial Team titles, Ontario, Age Group National and Senior National records, Canada Games and Youth Olympics medals and placed athletes on numerous Provincial and National Teams.

Alex has thrice been honoured as the Ontario Age Group Coach of the Year and selected as a coach for a number of Ontario and Canadian tour teams, most recently for the 2010 Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Maui and as Head Coach of the 2010 Ontario Tri-Meet Team.  Alex is a Level III certified coach. 

Alex has a B.Sc. in Education from the University of Michigan and as a swimmer, was an “All Big Ten” selection in the class of ‘86 and a varsity record holder in the 400 I.M.

BOB HAYES

Bob has been with the Toronto Swim Club since 2000 and has been recognized as one of the premier age-group coaches in the country. Bob Hayes brings his youthful energy to the important job of coaching our most elite Silver swimmers.

In the past decade Bob has coached our 11-14 year olds swimmers 12 Ontario and 9 National Age Group records. Having coached many Provincial and National age-group champions, Bob has received several Domestic Coaching awards of excellence for coaching and is a Level II certified coach.

His expertise in teaching techniques to our swimmers, combined with a well balanced coaching philosophy have given Bob a favourable reputation for coaching our athletes to become top swimmers.

Prior to coaching with TSC, Bob was a top level National swimmer. In 2000, while studying at U of T, Bob was awarded the University of Toronto Athlete of the Year. In 2001, Bob won 3 World Cup Medals in all three Backstroke events.

Bob is also a certified as an Elementary School Teacher. He is currently working as a substitute teacher at Kingsway College School, along side his coaching duties.

VICTOR DELAC

As TSC’s Head Development Coach, Victor Delac has the tremendous responsibility of coaching our youngest swimmers, many of whom have become the highest ranked swimmers for their age in Canada. He has coached swimmers to Ontario and National Records.

Victor’s well-balanced coaching philosophy incorporates a strong focus on technique with a great sense of humour. His goal is to build the athlete’s endurance and fitness level while maintaining their love for swimming.

Approachable and helpful, Victor gives the swimmers’ parents a good understanding of what is expected of their children.

In addition to coaching with TSC, Victor spent five years as the Head Coach of the Ryerson University Swim Team, where he coached Provincial and National medalists. He also helped in setting up an aquatic program for the Toronto Parks and Recreation Department.

Victor has been teaching in the Canadian Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) for the past 8 years. His roles range from Athletic Director to Head of Physical Education and Health. Victor holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto and has been with the Toronto Swim Club since 1996. Victor is a Level II certified coach.

BYRON MACDONALD

As Head Coach of the University of Toronto Varsity team, Assistant Coach of the TSC National group and President of the TSC Board of Directors, Byron MacDonald not only assists in the training of our elite swimmers, but also shapes the growth and development of the Club itself.

Byron is a former Olympic finalist in the 100 metre butterfly and has been with U of T since 1978. In this time Byron has produced over 100 international swimmers and has been the Head Coach of numerous Canadian teams, taking them to international competitions. A valued and respected coach and mentor, Byron has repeatedly been awarded “Coach of the Year” by his teams.

Assistant Coach to the 1992 Canadian Olympic team, Byron proudly watched as one of his swimmers won a bronze medal.

Byron is the proud father of three children including one former Gold II TSC swimmer, who is a current member of the UofT Varsity Blues team.

Byron is a Level III certified coach.

ASHLEY BRADBURY

Ashley’s experiences as a swimmer have shaped her coaching skills and, with her work with the Silver, Bronze and Development, she has become a valuable asset to the TSC staff. Ashley ensures that every swimmer who gets into the water comes out with confidence and a greater feel for swimming efficiency. Her swimmers come to swim because of the positive and energetic environment that she creates.

Ashley competed at the Junior National level and is a former recipient of the TSC President’s Trophy, awarded to swimmers that exemplify all the best qualities of dedication, commitment, perseverance, and social well being.

Ashley obtained a degree in Arts and Science from the University of Toronto in 2009. She has been coaching with TSC since 2004 and is a currently working on her Level II coaching certification. In addition, Ashley has assisted Swim Ontario and Swimming Canada as a Team Manager at various swim camps and competitions. Along with her coaching duties, she is working as the full time office administrator for TSC.

DAVE LING

Dave is a former Ontario University (OUA) champion and CIS (National university) All-Canadian swimmer while swimming for the University of Toronto. Dave has brought his enthusiasm and knowledge to the Gold II group and has made a great impact on the group–elevating it to higher levels every year. As a distance swimmer, Dave knew what hard work was and he is instilling that in his swimmers. Dave was also the captain of the Varsity Blues while in school, and he brings those leadership traits to the pool with him evevry day. The Gold II group has grown under Dave’s tutelage and will continue to do so.

NIKI REMEK

Niki was a competitive swimmer for 12 years. She competed for TSC at the Junior National level and was also a member of the U of T Varsity Blues swim team.

Niki obtained an Honours degree in Arts and Science from the University of Toronto in 2008. She has been coaching with TSC since 2007. She has worked with both the Silver and Bronze groups and has helped them develop good technique as well as endurance in their training. Along with her coaching duties, Niki works as a Media Planner at an advertising company in Toronto.

ANDREW MACDONALD

Andrew has been with the Toronto Swim Club since 2000. Andrew brings his knowledge of swimming technique and his winning personality to TSC.

Andrew swam competitively for the University of Toronto and is a former National Medalist in the 200 butterfly. As a swimmer, Andrew used superior technical ability to get himself to the top. This technical knowledge has become a valuable resource for many swimmers who benefit from Andrew’s coaching.

Andrew is a Level II certified coach.

LILY DONG

For the past five seasons, Lily has held various roles with the Scarborough Swim Club as a development coach, master’s coach, pre-comp supervisor, and swim school instructor. Entering second year of studying Kinesiology at the University of Toronto, Lily has decided to take an exciting opportunity of working with TSC this season as a Silver 3 coach.

Lily also teaches swimming and aqua fit at UofT’s Athletics Centre. Some might also have seen her working in the timing booth during meets that were held at the UofT pool. Asides from coaching and instructing, Lily is also an active master swimmer.

Lily is a Level II trained coach working to get fully certified by the end of the year.

NICOLE MACKENZIE

Nicole was a competitive swimmer for the Oakville Aquatic Club and the University of Toronto Varsity Blues as well as a member of the Varsity Water Polo Team. She is currently completing an Honors Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics from the University of Toronto. Nicole is in her first season with TSC as coach to the Bronze 4 and Intro programs and hopes to encourage good skill development as well as promote a positive learning environment. Along with her coaching duties Nicole is Coordinator of the Mississauga CitiSwim Program. Nicole is a Level I certified coach working towards her Level II certification.

LAURA MCPHIE

Laura has been coaching since 2002 for the Guelph Marlin Aquatic Club with a variety of age groups and levels. She was also the swim coach for the University of Western Ontario Triathlon Club from 2008 to 2010. This year she is excited to join our team as the Silver 2 coach.

Laura has a keen focus on technique and building strong foundation blocks for a lasting career in swimming. She attempts to balance good training with teaching a love and enjoyment for the sport.

ADAM SCHWARZ

Adam is new to the TSC family in the fall of 2011. He brings a strong swimming background and friendly personality to the pool deck. Adam will coach the Gold/Silver IV group.

Coming from Calgary (AB), Adam swam with Cascade Swim Club for 5 years. During which he achieved Provincial and Western Youth standards. Continuing to swim under various clubs, Adam marked his Western Open times. Moving to Toronto in 2008, Adam joined the University of Toronto Varsity Blues Swim Team and competed for 2 years in the OUA Circuit. A distance swimmer in his youth and a Freestyle sprinter when of age, Adam understands the dynamics of the water and the importance of conscious swimming.

In University, Adam began his coaching career with the University of Toronto affiliated swim group, Toronto Masters of The Universe. Here, he gained a valuable insight into the world of coaching and the complexities of multi-disciplinary swimmers. In his fourth year of University, Adam is pursuing a Honours Bachelor of Arts in International Development Studies, Political Science, and Environmental Science.

MARCO MONACO 

Marco joins the TSC coaching staff with 10 years of International swimming experience. He contributed to Canada’s national team from 2008-2010, including competing at the World University Games in 2009. At the 2010 Nations Cup, Marco served as the men’s team captain leading the Canadians to an overall team championship.

A recent graduate from the University of Toronto and competing for the Varsity Blues, Marco was selected to the CIS All Canadian Team 3 times, won multiple CIS and OUA medals, and in 2008 was chosen as the UofT male athlete of the year. He served as team co-captain in 2009 and 2010, where the Blues men finished 3rd and 2nd in respective national championships.

Marco brings a mix of excitement and technical expertise to our club. He will be working with the Gold 1, Silver 1, and Bronze 1 groups offering support to coaches and swimmers.
